Balkan Summer: The Classic Activities & the Phrases to Match

Summer in the Balkans has its own rhythm. The cities slow down, the coast fills up, every garden smells of grilled meat, and the most important question of the season is heard everywhere: Ideš li na more? — "Are you going to the seaside?"

Here are the classic summer activities, with the vocabulary and phrases to live them like a local.

Going "na more" — the seaside pilgrimage

For most of the region, summer revolves around one thing: more (the sea). Croatians head down their own coast; Serbians traditionally pack the car for Montenegro or Greece. The phrase ići na more (to go to the seaside) is so central that "Kad ideš na more?" — "When are you going to the sea?" — works as small talk from May to September.

If football is one Balkan religion, roštilj (barbecue) is the other, and summer is its high season. Expect ćevapi (grilled minced-meat fingers), pljeskavica (the giant Balkan burger), and endless debate about whose grill technique is correct.

Summer coffee is not a drink — it's a location. Terraces fill from morning to midnight, and ispijanje kafe (lingering over coffee) is a legitimate all-day activity. In Croatia you'll order kava, in Serbia kafa — same ritual, one letter of difference.

Summer is festival season — from big music festivals to the village vašar (fair) and slava gatherings. If someone invites you, go: it's the fastest language lesson you'll ever get.

It gets hot — and complaining about it beautifully is a local skill:

• Kakva vrućina! — "What a heat!" (the official sentence of July)
• U hladu je lepše. (SR) / U hladu je ljepše. (HR) — "It's nicer in the shade."
• Živeli! (SR) / Živjeli! (HR) — "Cheers!" — for the cold drink that follows
